Once reserved for royalty and clergy, Amethyst jewellery continues to carry a connotation of luxury and nobility to this day. In particular, rich deep purple Amethyst has associations of wealth, status, and prestige. That said, it is among the more accessible and down-to-earth gems. Amethyst is readily available around the world and comes in large crystals, perfect for impressive statement jewellery.

Ancient Lore

Amethyst has been important to cultures as far back as ancient Greece and Rome. It’s name translates from the Greek word améthystos - literally meaning “not intoxicated”. Ancient Romans and Greek considered amethyst a talisman against drunkenness and hangovers.

Take for example this ancient gold and amethyst ring uncovered in the city of Yavne, Israel. It was excavated from the site of the Byzantine era's largest known winery. The ring was found just 150 meters from the remains of a warehouse containing amphorae, a type of jar used to store wine.
