Brides and their bridal parties tend to spend the majority of their time focusing on their outfits, makeup and hair leaving jewellery and other finishes touches to an after thought.

This is a shame because many brides settle for costume jewellery or pieces they don't really like. However with a little bit of forward planning you can choose some beautiful bridal jewellery that will look stunning on your wedding day but also for many years to come.

Here are our teams top tips for brides to help you choose your perfect wedding day jewellery. With a bit of tweaking these tips can also work for the bridal party and wedding guests too.

1. Less is More

The first rule in choosing your wedding jewellery is - don't go overboard. Your jewellery should enhance and compliment your dress rather than fight and draw attention way from it. “Less is more” should be your mantra and stick to a few key pieces.

2. Comfort & Longevity

Look for jewellery that is comfortable and easy to wear. The perfect piece will take you from the church right through to the end of night. Don't be tempted by shiny costume or fashionable jewellery, it can be expensive and doesn't last the test of time the way pieces made in precious metals like silver or gold will. Keep an eye out for jewellery that you will love to wear time and time again. In the long run you will be much happier and you will always have something to remember your special day!

3. Your Dress

When choosing your jewellery you need to consider the style of your dress. What kind of neckline does your dress have? What colour is the material? Is your dress embellished? Are you planning to change into a different dress in the evening?

If your dress is heavily embellished, simple jewellery is the ideal, like diamond or pearl drop or stud earrings and a hair piece.

Use your jewellery choice to reflect the features in your dress – if you have pearls on your dress, some pearl jewellery will look fantastic.

If your dress has a high neckline, focus on some eye catching earrings and a bracelet on your wrist.

With a lower neckline, a statement necklace and simple earrings would work. If your gown is white, silver or white gold will look best.

Whilst if your gown is ivory or champagne, consider beautiful warm gold jewellery to compliment it.

4. Your Hair

Consider how you are planning to wear your hair on your wedding day. Up-styles suit lovely statement earrings or a necklace. If you are wearing your hair down a statement bracelet would work best paired with simple earrings.

5. Photo and a Friend

When shopping for your wedding day jewellery give yourself time and bring photos of your dress and hairstyle ideas. We also advise bringing a trusted friend/bridesmaids or Mum for a second opinion. It can be difficult to make decisions alone.

6. Be Yourself

Choose jewellery that reflects your personality and who you are. Every bride has her own style so be true to yours. Don’t choose your wedding day jewellery based on what you think might be expected of you. Choose pieces you will enjoy wearing and make you feel good.

If you like wearing big, chandelier earrings, a pop of colour or love a lariat necklace, go for it! While there is always a place for classic pearls don’t be afraid to choose something with a modern or contemporary twist.

Finally, if you don't tend to wear jewellery, do not underestimate how a simple stud earring, necklace or bracelet can finish off your wedding day look. Our advice would be keep your choices very simple and go for timeless pieces. On your wedding day you will probably forget you are wearing jewellery but you will be amazed how finished you will look in photographs.

7. Custom Pieces

Sometimes you just can't find exactly what you're looking for and a bespoke piece of jewellery is the only option. We work with you to design a bespoke piece, sometimes even using some of your older jewellery and stones in the process. Just remember this takes a bit more time and you will need to allow for that.
